Makers United

Makers United is building a more inclusive community of U.S. maker-entrepreneurs and craftspeople by co-creating an ecosystem where BIPOC and low- income makers feel recognized and represented, and have access to the tools they need to grow their businesses – and thrive.

A subset of Nest’s global network of creative entrepreneurs, Makers United elevates the voices of diverse makers in the United States to ensure that the growing American Makers Movement is generating opportunity for all makers regardless of gender, race, economic means or ability.

Opportunities For Growth

Makers United is committed to building a better connected ecosystem for makers. To do this, Nest maps the local landscape of small business support and connects the dots between makers and the local, national, and peer resources they need. Additionally, through the program, creative entrepreneurs can gain access to exclusive opportunities like the Madewell Maker Collective, Etsy’s Uplift Makers Program, Nest’s flagship Makers Future Fund, and more!

Where We Work

Makers United reaches makers and creative entrepreneurs in 47 states and several territories with a growing library of digital resources and a calendar of online learning events.

Nest supports historically marginalized communities across the US and invests in the preservation of important craft traditions. These special programs include work with Gee’s Bend Quilters of Alabama, the Gullah Weavers of South Carolina, Native and Indigenous craftspeople, makers in Appalachia, NYC’s Garment District, the craft community in Puerto Rico. Additionally, we have a regional program for arriving immigrants and refugees in 4 states.

“As a young jewelry business, the Makers United program has been guiding me through every major milestone and providing invaluable opportunities like in-person workshops, mentorship, trade show exposures, grant programs… [it] is the community I can turn to for advice, guidance, and a sense of belonging.”

Going Deeper

Makers United brings visibility to under-represented maker entrepreneurs across the US. The program is driven by participant voice: leveraging human-centered design, makers co-create programs with Nest based on their specific business priorities. They drive their experience as we equitably match resources to needs.

Through Makers United, Nest is committed to expanding market access by bridging the digital divide that disproportionately affects BIPOC and low-income makers by increasing their access to ecommerce opportunities and working with them to develop the digital literacy needed to succeed.

CASITA MICHI is a wellness brand rooted in Latiné culture.

With the lack of representation in the home fragrance space, we set out to create a product that would empower our community to practice unapologetic self-care through intentional product messaging and culturally empowered wellness.

In the Fall of 2021 CASITA MICHI became the first Latina-owned candle brand to debut at Macy's, closing the diversity gap and creating visibility and representation for the Latińe community that didn't previously exist.

Owner & Founder, Michelle Barrionuevo-Mazzini, is a multi-passionate creative entrepreneur and the owner/founder of two small businesses, CASITA MICHI and MB Creative Co. She is passionate about taking up space, building community through cultural nuances and helping underrepresented and marginalized communities feel seen through empowered wellness.

At Addis Ceramics, function is at the heart of everything we do.

We believe that surrounding  yourself with handmade objects adds intention to daily life, encouraging mindfulness, and fostering  a deeper connection to the world. Whether it’s a cup for your morning coffee or a plate for a shared  meal, our pottery is designed to enhance your everyday rituals and invite more meaning into your  home.

For the past 15 years, I’ve been  lucky enough to explore my passion for clay, traveling the world from South America to East Asia, all  while creating beautiful, functional ceramics. Our small but mighty studio in Tulsa, OK, is where all  the magic happens! Each piece is lovingly crafted by hand using locally sourced materials and  vibrant, in-house-made glazes.

Founded in 2020, Addis Ceramics is all about preserving the rich heritage of pottery while creating  pieces that will last a lifetime. Our goal is to help you bring a little more intention, beauty, and joy  into your daily life!

Bethany Marker Founder

My work is inspired by my surroundings in Louisville, Kentucky, my childhood in Appalachian Ohio, and a love of color and pattern.

I started my printmaking business, House of Figs Studio, in 2019 as a way to focus my creative energy into a larger project.

Each piece starts with a hand carved linoleum block which I print onto paper or fabric. My clutches and totes are then sewn together into one of a kind pieces. Ever since I was young, I have always loved unexpected color combinations and playful themes.

When I'm not in my studio, I love spending time outdoors or in the kitchen cooking for others. I have piles of half-pieced quilts, half-read books, & half-mended socks. Someday I will finish them all.
